Something I hear from Dem officials and President Obama as well is encouraging people to run for office if they want to change things. How the hell does an ordinary person run for office? How many people can just drop their job to do that? It's not a bad thing to say, and maybe it can encourage some people who are in a position to do that, but it just seems so impractical for most people.

Well, all the people who are losing their jobs can run for office.

I hope that this will get expletive more invlived locally. I don't know if those elections are over but city council, school board, etc they all hepatitis drive change.

Also a lot of local offices are very part time - like, committee meetings every few weeks, and even campaigning is fairly shoestring. If you start there, you're in a better place to figure out if you can or want to go further.
