I'm finally trying to get out of my foreclosed apartment and my first two responses were "we're not in the state anymore, we'd like you to take care of the place like it's your own, we're doing laudable things".

Those will not be good landlords. They may be laudable philanthropists, but landlords need to be present and accountable.
