Thanks everyone. What's weird is I didn't know it was coming, at least not yet. Mom did, and tried to prepare me for it, but I thought she was just exhausted and pessimistic because of that. It turned out the situation in his lungs was worse than X-rays showed (they only found this out when suctioning his airway for intubation), and I think his strength just ran out. But he sat up on the edge of his bed his last day, and was mostly peacefully dozing with only occasional complaints about pain.

I just went and paraded with my band, which was super fun, but then didn't stay for a beer after, because I felt awkward, and now I regret that! People were so friendly, but I just jetted. Oh well.
