It's not unbreakable, but using encryption makes it more difficult for government/police to spy on its citizens. The theory is that if only people who need to hide use encryption on their phone, then people in power know exactly who to track. If we all start using encryption, then we make it more difficult for the government to snoop and find targets.

Telegram is another nifty encrypted communication tool.
