Plei, re: cars, you might see if you can get a used Prius V. They have a surprisingly large rear: it's basically a wagon. Or on the cheaper side, an older Subaru wagon? Won't get the mileage of a hybrid, but they're reliable.
Or even a Honda Element, if you can find one. People hang on to them like woah.
