I'm going to be in Transcarquinesia (specifically Richmond) tomorrow evening, so I think I will pop down to the New Parkway for the 8:55 showing of Arrival. Anyone want to join me? Contact info in profile

Buffista Movies Across the 8th Dimension!
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I posted in Natter, but I should have posted here. I've drawn up my Oscar spreadsheet and now begin the planning to squeeze in as many as possibly before Sun night.
I have Lobster from the library and plan to watch tonight, plus 13th off Netflix.
Wed night might be a bust.
Thursday I have asked for the day off and if I get it I could knock out Arrival and maybe Fences.
Friday after work would normally be when the real marathon begins, but I have a mandatory work thing at 5:30 AND have to get mac from drivers ed at 8:20, so that ruins after work slot #1.
Definitely watch Fences if you can.
I have been kind of resisting watching Fences because I saw a stage production years ago with James Earl Jones and, I don't know, I don't want to replace that memory with the movie? Something like that.
Fences is the movie I feel guilty about not watching this year, but I just haven't had any urge to go see it.
I am aheming Manchester by the Sea tonight. I cannot with Casey Affleck, so I wouldn't give it $.
The only movie with major noms I haven't seen yet are Fences and Hacksaw Ridge. Beyond the Oscar noms, I should have seen Fences already because August Wilson is a Pittsburgh playwright and the movie was shot, like 15 mins away from my work. I'll see if I can pop off to the local theater in the next couple of days to catch it.
Now, Hacksaw Ridge, I have absolutely zero desire to see and I feel perfectly fine about that.
I'm glad to know Hacksaw Ridge is based on a man who really existed but I don't want to see any more war movies.

From what I just read in The Hollywood Reporter, they seem to have basically filmed the play so maybe you're not missing anything?
This is the first year I fully implemented my 2-hour rule (in that I don't feel obligated to see any Oscar movie over two hours), and I realized I'm perfectly fine with it. Life's too short. I may watch Manchester by the Sea or Fences on DVD, but I have no impetus to see them in a theater. And I have zero interest in Hacksaw Ridge. Or Silence (but mostly because that is a great book memory from college that I don't want to mess with).
I still have screeners to watch of Loving and 20th Century Women at some point in the next couple of days, but have otherwise covered all major categories (and the live action and animated shorts, which I see every year in the theater).
Yes, I couldn't face Hacksaw Ridge, apparently it's very gory. (Also: Mel Gibson).
The Lobster is a very, very weird film but certainly worth a look.
I too am doing my Oscars homework. I watched Life, Animated last night and intend to see Captain Fantastic, Fences, and My Life as a Zucchini before Sunday evening. We'll be live-blogging again so I have to get up at 3 am.
