Just came back from seeing Moonlight. Gosh, what a beautiful film. It's sparse yet full of feeling, but without sentimentality. The entire film fairly vibrates with all the things unsaid, with the intensity of inchoate longing. There is a scene in the third act in which a character cooks a meal for another, and it's a simple scene, but I just started to well up, not because it was particularly sad but because all the stuff that had been sitting in my chest had to go somewhere. The performances are just extraordinary.
I've been crying in a lot of movies this fall. Arrival and Moonlight and the mother of all weepers, Manchester by the Sea, hasn't even opened yet.

I'm not sure why I didn't cry at Moonlight, but I think it may be because only sentimentality makes me cry, and you're right that Moonlight had none.
On another note: How does this cast end up in a movie with 0% on Rotten Tomatoes? [link] (Actually, isn't there a podcast that explores this exact topic? I should look into that.)

I've always had parrot ear--spend a little time with someone with an accent or dialect and start speaking it back to them. I have to fight it, lest they think I'm mocking them.
But when you rely on an accent gained purely by mimicry, there are always nuances you miss. Having the physicality that generates proprietary vowels, consonants, or cadences explained, demonstrated, and coached is just invaluable. Understanding the mechanics gives you something to practice, rather than just the resultant sound.
That truly was an excellent example of how accent coaching works. Thanks again.
