It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Can Maisie Williams be a Jedi?
Trailer for Ari Aster's new film, Midsommar: [link]
That is clearly influenced by the original 70's The Wicker Man, one of my faves. It looks splendidly atmospheric and I love Florence Pugh, who plays the lead. But I still haven't recovered from Aster's first film, Hereditary (so great, so fucking traumatizing OMG)
I usually happily go to movies by myself but might have to recruit a friend to come with. Being a scaredy cat who loves certain brands of horror is a dicey process.
I cannot WAIT for that movie. And yeah, Hereditary was so great and traumatizing. I want to rewatch it (I've been told that there's so much more to find on a rewatch), but I haven't felt brave enough to do it.
Daytime horror is so rare. The Wicker Man and... I think It Follows from a few years back? Can't think of any memorable ones that I've seen other than that. Also, bonus William Jackson Harper as, like, the only black man in all of Sweden! (GET OUT, CHIDI!!)
I think Hereditary is streaming in one of the services I'm subscribing to, but hahahaha no way I am rewatching that. Maybe if I have a bunch of friends over and also got really really drunk. Honestly, that Thing That Happens (you know which, if you've seen the movie) is probably THE most upsetting thing I've seen in movies in several years. I saw the movie in the theater, and after the half way mark, I found myself trying to fold myself into the seat, like, make myself as small as possible, as if that could lessen the emotional trauma. My goodness.
You are simultaneously making me really want to see Hereditary and really really not want to see it.
Agreeing with -t, here.
Oh G-D, that Thing That Happens. But the image that will forever haunt me is the shot of the mom banging her head on the attic door to get to the son. Nope nope nope. I have woken up in the middle of the night with that image in my head and haven't been about to get back to sleep.
I am really glad I didn't see it in the theatre, but at the communal weekly horror night a friend runs, because that way I was able to THOROUGHLY spoil myself for the entire movie. That helped a little bit.
I don't even want to read the synopsis for it OR read Atropa's whitefont.
Hahaha that whitefont scene, yes. Also, the one in which Toni Collett is hanging in the corner of the ceiling in the back of the frame, out of focus, and you don't realize until a beat laterthat she's couching over there suspended like a creepy fucking spider. Accck. During my screening, you could hear the people freaking out in waves as more and more of the audience noticed what was going on.
Honestly though, I wouldn't call this movie scary in a traditional sense. It's just profoundly upsetting and leaves you feeling so uneasy with a huge knot in the chest afterward. It's more about grief than terror, I think. And all the hurtful, devastating things we do to our loved ones in the name of love, things that leave you broken. The Satanism is just a metaphor. Although it's kind of fun to randomly yell out "Hail Paimon!" for no reason. Heh.
