I have Issues with This Is Me that I'm not able to articulate well.

All of the "freaks and oddities" in the film are played by able-bodied actors in makeup. And then in the live Oscar performance, even *that* level of representation wasn't there. Keala Settle is great, but I found it very uncomfortable to watch a crowd of standard-issue backup singers (all able-bodied, all conforming pretty well to commonly accepted standards of body shape/size) proudly proclaiming how brave they were to be seen in public. Especially when the performance came not too long after the surprisingly good montage about Hollywood and representation!

(And also, this isn't important, but I just don't like Pasek & Paul as composers. Their songs are all so generic, and they all sound the same! Being catchy is not the same as being good!)

I'm in a bit of an Oscar hangover with the goal of watching movies now gone.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

The music for The Shape of Water is lovely but honestly it's a travesty that Jonny Greenwood didn't win it for Phantom Thread, which has the best score of any films of the year by a HUGE margin.

Word. I'm thrilled for Deakins of course, but Greenwood was my biggest hope for a surprise win.

Sadly, there were no real surprises. Even the four times the odds-on favorite didn't win, the Oscar went to the film in a very close second place. I am very happy with one of those, which was The Silent Child live-action short. That was a nice moment.

Well, I'm almost done with The Great Unseen and ready to take on new projects. Or, you could join me in #52FilmsByWomen.

I am sure I could create a great unseen list of my own, there's a lot I have missed through the years. #52 films by women would be cool. I'm hoping to see at least 2 movies in theaters each month.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Do I want to go see Annihilation, Game Night, or Black Panther IMAX after work? Game Night's schedule gives me the most cushion to get there before it starts...

I saw Annihilation last night, and I want more people to see it and talk with me about it to help clarify what I thought. (It was really good, but very thinky. So I need more people to think about it with me.)

But Black Panther was definitely more fun.

I have already seen Black Panther. I know I want to see it again, but maybe not today and I have to think about the IMAX 3d options.

That was interesting and disturbing. I am not sure what to think.

It's occupying the same headspace for me as Arrival, even if it's nowhere near as good. I wish it had spent more time on the interior lives of the other characters - I think the themes about identity and choices and self-destruction would have been stronger if Natalie Portman hadn't been our only POV character.
