I had fun time with Ghostbusters and agree with McKinnon being a standout, despite Holtzmann having less character development than the other three. What brilliant physicality.
I don't watch SNL these days, but someone linked me to a sketch they did last year in which McKinnon plays an alien abductee on youtube, which made me laugh until I cried. She made everyone on that sketch (except Cecily Strong, God bless) break: [link]
I found the movie amusing rather than really funny, but McKinnon was a pleasure to watch. I also liked Andy Garcia in his brief moments.
her character was like if Tank Girl had gotten an engineering degree
I NEED THIS MOVIE IN MY LIFE
Tank Girl doesn't need a degree because she has Jet Girl
Warning: There is a Buffista-specific potential crypoint that people may need to be prepared for - as the team is moving into their new digs and setting up shop, they're all bopping and rocking out to a bouncy happy song from the 80s that made my heart feel all joyful and sad and clutched-up and then right before the chorus I realized that it was one of ita's favorite guilty pleasure songs, and my heart just kind of flopped over.
So, if your emotions are easily triggered by music and memories, you may want to brace yourself just a bit when they're moving into their new digs and setting up shop.
On the plane to NY, husband and I watched, among other things, Mamma Mia.
Everyone was either drunk, or wanted a free trip to Greece, or both. Right? Please tell me I'm right.
Pierce Brosnan's singing in that was pretty painful. But I was able to turn off my brain and enjoy the rest. Watching Meryl Streep and Colin Firth just throw themselves into the cheese was kinda fun.
I'm not saying alcohol wasn't involved, mind. Both for the actors and for me while watching it.
We rewatched the original Ghostbusters tonight with a friend who'd never seen it and it's really not that good.
I quote from GB all the time and yet when I rewatched it I was very meh. And, yes, creepy and sexist.
I think both the old and new one are fun, but not LOL funny, if that makes sense. And they both have finales that go on far too long. I guess that's the SNL element?
In any case, in a summer that is really lacking in "summer movies" I think
Ghostbusters
is a breath of fresh air. I loved the premise and origin story, it has great set pieces, and some of the ghosts were actually scary!
Strangely, I thought Colin Firth came out of it pretty well.
And I'm sure Meryl had a grand old time. Honestly, I think the best thing about that movie is the meme that goes around Tumblr:
If you don't like musicals, you should remember that Cosette, Miranda Priestley, James Bond, Leonard's mom, Dr. Erik Selvig, Howard Stark, Molly Weasley and Mr. Darcy sing Abba songs in Greece.
