I think we might get a Vader style Ren redemption in the end. Turns just in time to die.
Buffista Movies Across the 8th Dimension!
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I agree with all of your points, Consuela. Also, I guess the movie is trying to make me think something else, but I will never believe anything OTHER than that Rey and Kylo Ren are brother and sister.
Also, on a meta-level, I'm mad that Leia is the only one of the original three left. (Although I imagine Luke could still show up ala Yoda?)
Consuela, re: Sixth, didn't Luke tell Rey that the Jedi screwed up everything? It was in the middle of a lot of other "I messed up terribly and now everything's awful," but I thought he brought up the Jedi order as a whole, too.
But, yeah, I agree with your other points.
I definitely got "the whole order needs to go" more than "I flubbed it" from Luke, but that could easily have just been my take.
I thought it was absolutely hilarious in a totally not-commented-upon way that Luke made his force-projection self younger and thinner. I see you, Mr. My Ascetic Lifestyle Barely Covers My Vanity And Does My Ass Look Big In These Robes.
Loved Rose. Almost loved Holdo but they never gave her a chance to really be a developed character? It felt sort of "oh and hey here's the obvious person to be your new leader!". Maybe if I had any familiarity all with the extended universe stuff in between...
Cried like a tiny baby at the whole ending. All of it. Cried extra at little kids telling the legend with made-up action figures, but it was a happy cry that time.
Oh, man, the kids at the end! I yelped when the kid Force-grabbed the broom.
I was glad they gave Leia at least one scene where she actively used the Force, so it didn't seem like she'd completely ignored an inborn talent that would be a MASSIVE advantage in fighting against the vestiges of the Empire. I mean, Luke became a full-fledged Jedi in less than 6 years with relatively little of that under expert supervision, you'd think she'd have found time in 34 or so to cultivate a few tricks.
Of course, I wish she'd been allowed to use it to give Kylo Ren a Force-whipping that would have left him curled up in the fetal position and crying through the end of Episode IX...
Yes to Matt's second spoilery paragraph, in full.
Incidentally, I'm overjoyed at all my fabulous bitches (both Buffista and non-Buffista) jumping on the dude on my facebook who was all "blah blah movie about having to listen to middle-aged women blah" so I didn't even have to.
So, I agree with all of you about The Last Jedi, and may I add that long fight scenes have become boring to me. When the fight lasts more than a few blows and no one is dead or seriously injured except redshirts, I start thinking about lunch. Also, I hate that I can see through the fight choreography now, THANKS
