Perception of distance is weird. When I was growing up in Pennsylvania, a trip of 20 miles was something you planned for. A trip of 60 miles was an adventure. Town and the grocery store was seven miles away and not a drive you'd just do if you're bored.
Now my one-way commute is 20 miles, and when I trusted my car/traffic more, 60 miles only warranted a "Do I want to be on the road for an hour in this traffic? I'd better get a drink for the ride."
The lentil/white bean salad reminded me that the Silver Palate cookbook has a recipe for a cold lentil salad with a dressing of walnut oil, tarragon-flavored white wine vinegar and garlic. You cook the lentils in broth (chicken for omnivores, could use vegetable broth for non-meat eaters) with an onion with a clove (or two? three?) stuck in it, and a bay leaf. When done, drain, run the dressing ingredients through a blender, put the lentils in a non-reactive bowl, and pour the dressing over them. Let cool, stirring now and then, refrigerate when cool enough. Serve cold with chopped scallions, parsley (NOT cilantro!), and walnuts on top. Yummy. But very garlicky.
Thanks for the ideas, you guys!
What the heck are harem shorts? I kinda like harem pants, but I can't see how those could become shorts?
After yesterday, I will forever drink when someone says "Gotten T-boned" at Never Have I Ever.
(I'm fine, the car may not be.)
So that was definitely an experience to not have. Ow.
I was picturing this:

But it's hard to see them coming back in the era of skinny-every-kind-of-pants.
They'll probably come back when codpieces do.
msbelle, that is insane! The fact that none can be done in advance is just stupid. It means summer school will be chaos.
White beans don't count as protein?
I kinda like harem pants, but I can't see how those could become shorts?
Because they should not. They are harem pants but short and they don't even look good on the models. [link] Sir Walter Raleigh's outfit looks better.
Glad you are ok, chrismg! Yikes.
Yikes!
I'll bet folding money there's some bearded dude in Wicker Park wearing a codpiece right now (and no...)
