I'm really loving Ms. Marvel but had some major issues with Ep. 3. They did a major jump from
kindly request for undefined "help" with time to think about it to "they're going to kill your family!" super fast. And why? Why attack the wedding? If they wanted to grab her, ANY OTHER TIME would have been better; if they wanted hostages... well, okay, that would make sense, except they never said that and they didn't seem particularly concerned that everyone was leaving.
Anyway, that really threw me out. Maybe they cut some stuff they shouldn't have? Otherwise it was great, and I loved
the wedding itself, the dancing, the reappearance of the Hulk shalwar kameez, Ameer's worry, the absolute fondness of the couple...
So still loving the show, the actors, and the style. I've had a couple moments of eyerolling when
parents react in a way that makes sense for the plot but not for, say, parents who couldn't find their daughter during an emergency...
But mostly love it. And am eager to find out what happens next.
Concur, Emily. That was a unexpected escalation. But I'm still enjoying the hell out of the show: it's just so charming and embedded in its social context.
Ms Marvel
Ep. 4
So many tantalizingly nostalgically familiar tidbits. I knew most of the Urdu phrases. It bothers me that the subtitles labeled them Hindi.
So much artistic license. That was a much cleaner and less crowded Karachi than what I remember. It bothers me that they got the kites wrong.
The vehicle chase was almost watch-from-the-hall silly. Not quite as bad as the James Bond movie, but close. And I wanted to hear someone shout, "My cabbages!"
I'm enjoying it overall, but they are trying to tell too much story in too little time. The jumps in the storytelling are jarring.
Emily, I agree, there was a big narrative leap there, but I'm still loving the show. I haven't seen the most recent episode yet.
At the end of episode 4, I assume that Kamala
went back in time to the train out of Karachi that her great-grandfather and young grandmother were on?
And following that thread, I'm also assuming (speculation, not spoiler) that
Kamala will meet her great-grandmother Aisha and get the second bangle.
Ms Marvel
Steph, I'm thinking we're going to see the
trail of stars
event.
That could probably lead Kamala
to Aisha, though,
right? I feel like that's a possible outcome.
Definitely agree with those speculations. Still feeling very rushed, like
the Red Daggers thing was SO fast and underexplained. And Waleed's death did feel kind of tragic, but we'd only met him ten minutes ago so...
Also, and I think this is a sort of personal flaw, I don't really like "fun" fight scenes.
The only reason you're not scared for your LIFE is because the plot says you shouldn't be. He threw a knife at you! What's with the joking and the following to a secret hideout? Also, who are these guys? We didn't all read the comics! Maybe I should read the comics.
I've been watching some reaction videos which has been really fun but brings me back to something I had mis-justified at the time in the interrogation in episode 2:
I had assumed at the time that they had footage of Kamala that gave them some idea of her ethnicity, but rewatching it they clearly only have her in the whole suit, so... that's just pure racism, right? I mean, clearly they're supposed to be the bad guys, but still that's wow.
I don't expect the pacing problems to improve, but I'm still loving it so much. Also, is it just me, or did Disney totally underpromote this thing? I missed the first two episodes because I just didn't know it had started. Disney, this is the only reason I'm paying you!
Yes, we keep commenting that it feels like we missed an episode. Or 3. Because they keep just plowing past relationships and motivations and stuff.
Thank you! It's always such a relief to find it's not just me. I watch New Rockstars YouTube videos (I have a very boring life, okay?) and although they're very positive one commented that they just weren't feeling anything for the
the Clandestines
and I cheered. So nice to not feel alone! I still love it, I just want more depth of it!
Edited because "i" does not, in fact, stand for "I think this might be a spoiler."
