Just back from Far From Home. I absolutely loved the scenes with
Spider-man battling Mysterio's illusions. That was some absolute classic comic book Mysterio stuff and it looked absolutely fantastic.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. I knew
Mysterio was going to end up a villain. Pretending to be a hero is his whole schtick.
I did not expect the
Multiverse to be a lie.
Watching the latest
Legion,
it occurred to me that the design of the Time Demons and the effect they had on the narrative really had the vibe of what Bill S. was doing back in New Mutants.
I think I am going to continue to think of the next Thor movie as "Thor 4: More Thor".
Have seen Far From Home, hooray! I really appreciate how it was totally a Spider-Man movie with that particular tone and Peter doing the Hero's Journey like whoa, but also was so solidly enmeshed with the Avengers. Really well done.
Cast announcement for Eternals out of SDCC: [link]
Don't know anything about Eternals, but the folks involved in it are some interesting off-the-left-field choices. Chloe Zhao is directing this -- I only know her as the director of The Rider, which is a quiet and lyrical docu-drama/western. Hard to imagine anything further from superhero franchise, honestly. It's got a terrific diverse cast led by Angelina Jolie. I'm particularly hyped to see Don Lee in the cast, who's a Korean actor also known as Ma Dong Seok, and who was so marvellous in Train to Busan.
There is also going to be a movie about an Asian Marvel hero (... did not know they had one!) called Shang-Chi, and goodness, Tony Leung is gonna be in it. TONY freakin' LEUNG!! Who cares what role he plays! [link]
That one is going to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who did Short Term 12 (great, great film, with Brie Larson and Lakeith Stanfield and Rami Malek before they broke out, streaming on Amazon Prime, everyone go watch it right now).
So Marvel keeps giving reins to their smaller films to quirky indie directors with one or two acclaimed films under their belt, except they're clearly seeking out voices outside the usual white dude enclave. Gotta tip my hat to them for that.
Good Lord. Thor 4 will have Natalie Portman as the first female Thor.
t braces preemptively for fanboy outrage
And apparently there is gonna be a Blade movie with Mahershala Ali in the title role?!
