A comic artist I follow just said that, in fact, when Gunn was first hired by Disney he recalls some of his progressive peers saying, "Uh, no, he's said some fairly horrible stuff and you need to look a lot more closely before you sign him on," but they were ignored. And now it's all being framed as leftist pedophile-enabling hypocrisy, when it was lefties who raised the alarm years back.
I never had any idea of any of this; I had no idea on earth who he was before the first GOTG.
I don't know how to react to that. I assume he'll land on his feet because he's a white guy and some not-Disney outfit will be happy to have him make movies for them. GotG has such a particular voice, it seems doubtful that someone else will be able to pull it off, but maybe GotG3 can be different from the first 2 but as good or even better. Could go either way.
I'm not super happy about the thought that having said some fucked up shit 7+ years ago would be justification for getting fired today.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it's stupid to fire him now, after X number of years he's been employed by them.
Whether he should have gotten the job in the first place, I don't know. I haven't seen specifically what he said.
Should people be given opportunities, after they (supposedly) learn from their mistakes? Sure, in theory. But yeah, my sympathy for poor white guys being denied opportunities is low.
It is all just super gross. And the false equivalencies being slung around are making me want to punch things. It's all a big chaotic sea of
It happened to Roseanne so this is fair
[??? he was fired for 7-year-old tweets he'd already repudiated six years ago; she was fired for a consistent pattern of tweets going up to barely an hour before they finally fired her],
suck it up snowflakes, tick for tack
[yes, that one is a verbatim quote],
shut up pedo defenders, everyone else says things ten times as gross you're just mad because he was mean to your godking
and on and on and on. It's a trash fire.
I keep thinking of David saying a few months ago, "I have come to the conclusion that middle-aged white men are really the source of all our problems. I hate them. I am one, and I hate us. We all just need to sit down and shut the fuck up forever from here on out."
Ugh. I was napping and missed all of this. Like JZ, I adore these movies. What a mess.
I dove down the rabbit hole earlier this evening, and while I'm not sure about the issue of firing someone for 9-year-old tweets (even if the job is a very public one craeting materials dependent on public goodwill to succeed), the sheer volume of rape and pedophile "jokes" makes my skin crawl. I can definitely see why Disney would treat Gunn as a hot potato once once all this got unearthed.
And now the cast is defending him and calling for him to be rehired.
He didn't make just one or two jokes. Maybe maybe I could see overlooking that but these jokes were his "thing" and that is just wrong
He's spoken at length in the past about the ways the molestation of a large number of his Catholic school classmates by one of the priests contributed to the fucked-up environment there (he claims that he was never targeted, but he sure was around it, aware of it, and has talked about the adults around not believing what was going on).
I suspect that particular life experience contributes to direction of his edgelord era stupidity.
I am of a mind to forgive, since he has already apologized, and, much more importantly, has not repeated the behavior in almost a decade. One of my brothers had a horrible sense of humor like that (so bad that my mother made him promise not to joke when he gave her eulogy) and only improved in his 50s. He is also a great dad and husband and very kind to all the people around him.His actions have always been ethical, but his words were not. If Gunn was still doing that, then it my reaction would be different.
I'm just gonna report what JZ said last week:
when Gunn was first hired by Disney he recalls some of his progressive peers saying, "Uh, no, he's said some fairly horrible stuff and you need to look a lot more closely before you sign him on," but they were ignored. And now it's all being framed as leftist pedophile-enabling hypocrisy, when it was lefties who raised the alarm years back.
