That's pretty much the modus operandi for Marvel films these days: A mid-credits scene to tease a future MCU movie, and a post-credits scene to set up the sequel to the movie you're watching. If they vary from that, it's probably because of scheduling, or they haven't decided yet if there will be a sequel.

I thought it interesting that they killed off the Ancient One without Strange being ready to take her place as Sorcerer Supreme. In fact he has nowhere near the expertise of Wong, Mordo, or the other masters aside from what he learned about using the Eye of Agamotto. Though I suppose he may have learned a lot depending on just how many times his encounter with Dormammu was looped and how much practice that afforded him.

I thought that was interesting too, Matt. But maybe it was an acknowledgment that Strange really couldn't have learned EVERYTHING he needed to know to be Sorceror Supreme in such a short time. I took it as the best they could do with the source material to NOT have a "White Man Who Does It Better Than The POC Masters" character. Several times they mentioned both that he still has lots to learn, and that it's remarkable that he advanced so quickly (once he learned to "surrender his ego"). This movie was all the things I like, so I was biased to like it despite its flaws, and I was not disappointed. Perfect, no, lotsa fun, yes.

Oh, and also: we saw it in IMAX 3D, which was trippy and cool, but the effects aren't necessary, so 2D would be fine if you think 3D will make you sick.

I enjoyed the heck out of it. I thought Bricklayer Crumpetbum's performance was excellent, but his accent was so-so. He wears the cape with wonderful panache.

Zen, the only thing is, there really wasn't anything substantial that required the beginning of the story to be set in 2016, rather than far enough back to give Strange his canonical 7+ years of tutelage under the Ancient One before moving back to New York to stand on his own. That actually would have worked far better to give him the time for character development such as realizing his own mistakes and being apologetic to Christine Palmer, as well as the bravery and self-sacrifice needed for his solution to the Dormammu problem. As far as I can tell, the only reason the movie didn't start in the mid-2000s or earlier was so Wong could name check the Avengers when showing off the big magic globe display.

I agree, Matt. It's unrealistic to think all of that happened in one year. It really only had to be 2016 when he was touring the library and Wong mentioned the Avengers. I prefer to think everything previous took a more reasonable amount of time. I'm real good at handwaving and retconning on the fly.
