Plot-wise I'd say it works as a stand-alone if you're familiar with Star Trek, but I think watching the first five of the season would give you some good build-up. Have you seen the series at all?

No, I somehow didn't realize it was a series and not - I don't even know what I thought it was, a novel or comic or something? - until pretty recently and haven't seen any. Catching up on two seasons is a long term project, but 5 episodes I can probably manage fairly quickly

Wound up binge watching The Gilded Age. Its very enjoyable.
I'm sad to have never been on it. First I was cast in a tiny role that was cut and I've been Ashlie Atkinson's double/stand-in in the past. Alas, no dice. Just keep shooting that thing, damnit!
