I have a friend who has political views that are pretty much completely opposite to the rest of our social group, and he has been known to complain that he can't discuss politics with us because "we're all dismissive and mean."

So what's weird is that my students often think that when I disagree with their ideas that it is personal. Disagreement is not a personal attack.
