Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

This chart seems right to me. Like, sure a lot of people live into their 90s now, but most don't.

Punishingly Intricate

My old cats were 17 and 18 respectively when they died. The 17-year old one had diabetes for about half his life. They were both fully indoor cats, that does make a huge difference. My brother & sister-in-law's cat who just died was, like, 24 and had been an indoor/outdoor cat for part of her life. One time she went missing for 3 months and showed back up on their doorstep with no inherent harm done.

Right, yeah, just like that.

It's weird having all young animals now after so many years with seniors/geriatrics. We hardly ever go to the vet at all (knock wood)!

I'm sorry, Steph. That seems like a natural thing to happen right now? I know it doesn't make it any easier.

I have so much work to get done and my head hurts so much and I need to go over to the hospital and I can't calm down. I need to get this stuff done.

No. You don't. You need to take care of yourself and your husband. If they need that article, they can ask for it back and send it to someone else. You and Tim come first.

This is not like "Oh, he tripped and messed up his ankle, I've got to help him hobble around the house." This is a major organ deciding to spontaneously go on strike and have doctors make "Oh, how interesting" noises (never good). Despite evidence to contrary, most managers are human beings and understand that family health crises can mess up work schedules.

You do not need to get that stuff done right now.
