I hate so very much the habit of always trying to find a way to pin the responsibility for suffering on the individual and not the system, and then using it an excuse to withhold what I would think of as a natural tendency to feel empathy and regret for someone else's suffering.

There's a lot of nuttiness out there. Idaho is resisting an international consistent regulation on child support payments on the grounds it would introduce Sharia law. And in Texas, where the Army is having exercises, the state is keeping an eye on them just in case they're (the Army, that is) is planning on overthrowing the state government. um ... huh?
There was something posted on Facebook in the last few days about how the belief that life is fair leads to people blaming individuals for their problems. If everyone gets what they deserve in a balanced universe, then obviously you deserve what happens to you.
I saw that--makes sense to me.
Obviously I don't think life is fair or that people deserve to suffer, but the thing of it is, even if I think someone has actively brought some of their misery upon themselves, that wouldn't make me less empathetic to their plight.
That's because you're a better person.
I just got caught up and was ready to be all "new house likes carrots" but between kitties in distress and Baltimore and train suicides, it is so trivial.
I have a lot of friends in the police force who are posting knee-jerk reactions. Violence against the police is just as wrong as violence against one else. I'm trying not to block them but it is getting rough.
Suzi, please. Post about your house. We absolutely want to hear about it.
I just got done with a stranger and "He sold pot, maybe." Well, it's on the record that his spinal cord was torn apart...if you can't see why that's worse, well, go sit with the gun freaks that want to defend what automatic weapons do to six-yer-old bodies. I guess we can only be upset if they really screw up and maul the citizen of the year(Which, fingers crossed, could happen any day now)
I will be trivial for you -- got my hair cut, new license, and then swung by DSW and ended up with three new pairs of shoes. In my defense, they are all replacements for current shoes that are nearing or past their useful life, and two of them were cheap.
