Sumi, given the vintage of the house, I wondered the same. It's one thing, restoration, complete other an incremental regut, which is what he did.
I know some of my electric is dodgy (can't space heat and microwave in the kitchen; no hair dryer and ac on same circuit,) I will eventually have to replace meter to house main and main sewage, I need to repipe to the second floor, I've got lots of plaster that needs work once I stop the damned roof leak, I need to reinsulate, I'd love to put n a new kitchen and second bath, BUT most of this is just age and neglect, not deliberate incompetence.
Also makes me glad I got a place with minimal updates from a slumlord landlord rather than a flipper. He did a crappy job on a lot of things, but he didn't actually do a lot of things- and dumb stuff, the inspector mostly caught. I wish he'd caught the mismatched metal pipe joins, but that was painted over and at least a couple years old then.
Most of the weird shit in my house is because a former owner was a diehard if not always competent DIYer. Even when the weirdness is annoying I find it kind of endearing because I can see what he was thinking.
Looks too overcast to see the moon here. I might just go to bed.
I swear I'm putting a clause in my will that the next homeowner (I'm never moving again) CANNOT PAINT OVER THE BANNISTER. Other than that, I'm trying to do it right, but someday, someone won't love my vintage lavender and green bathroom.
The pie was brought to my friend's BBQ and pronounced yummy. The BBQ was exciting because he cooked a whole pig. There was so much food leftover even though a lot of people came. Apparently last year they did it for the first time and got a 75 pound pig and only had about 20 people, and made everyone take home pounds of meat. This year they only got a 38 pound pig? And I think like half of it was left!!
That is hardcore, meara. Dang. I'm jelly.
It's pretty impressive--he had this whole box that the pig roasts in that he had gotten, but then he'd also rigged it up, because the coals roast on top of the box/pig, and he was sad at the "wasted' heat, so he put boards on the side pointing up and skewers through the boards so he could also roast three chickens above the coals! And people brought lots of side dishes and ice cream and it was good times, and I am very very sad they are moving to New Jersey. BOO. (for good reason--I know them from college, and they moved here because she works at Amazon and he was finishing his dissertation, and he was applying for jobs, and now is going to start a tenure-track job at Princeton. Can't turn that down!)
Also I found out you can get Jeni's ice cream here at one of the shmancy supermarkets I never go to. I may need to go to there.
That's a hell of a BBQ!
I slept so much last night! It was amazing. Now I'm going to spend most of the day on the couch. Perfect.
That sounds so great, meara!
I woke up with a headache and might just write today off. Breakfast seems like an awful lot of trouble.
Was up early. Ready for nap. We are having a big surprise b'day thing for my MIL's 70th tonight. I should nap so I can stay awake later.
