I would totally not mind performance reviews if they 1) reflected the entire past year and not just the past month, 2) there had been periodic meetings to go over my performance throughout the year as I do with my employees, and 3) my boss actually practiced what she preached.

Oh dear god. One of my former students who was studying at UCLA died of a heart attack this weekend. He had MD and was in a wheelchair. But this is still a shock.
