My CU has a residency requirement, that's it as far as I know.

Mine had a residency requirement to join. But when I was moving to Portland, I asked how soon I needed to close it and you don't have to be a resident to keep the accounts. So I still use San Diego County Credit Union. Although I also have an account at a more accessible bank too. Since the nearest ATM or branch was 1,000 miles away for several years. It's still 100 miles away.

Those are the ice weasels. Totally different species, though I would think guilt weasels were also primarily nocturnal.

The first CU I joined was an "education" credit union so you had to be a teacher or work for a school (or maybe just the public school system in the county) or be a student/. Then they dropped it to - you had to live in the county. And then they changed it to live or work in the county. They pretty much became the biggest CU or bank in the area, but growing pains did mean they had more a big bank feeling but still better tahn going to a bank where you weren't sure if it was goign to go under or be bought out.

After you join you're in even if you move.

The current CU I'm a part of you have to live work or worship or go to school within certain counties. The CU itself is nice and has perks like ATM reimbursements monthly up to $25 in ATM fees. Everything is free (checking, in person transactions, etc) and you get a percentage back on your checking and savings accounts ifyou meet certain requirements that are really easy to meet.

There isn't a branch close to where I live now so investigated another CU and it was way more like a bank, fees for EVERYTHING. I could have no ATM fees but be charged $2 for in person transactions OR free in person transactions and be charged for ATM usage and other stuff. Everything could be free if I kept like $5000 in checking at all times.

I told them nope nope nope and stayed with the CU I'm with.

I wish I could CU. Hopkins, specifically. But not eligible. The one I could do is stupid and useless. And WF is at least efficient. Though I do want to open a small checking account with a bank with an atm in walking distance for market cash. About the only reason I carry cash. Been meaning to for... awhile. I think I could probably go thru Citibank because many of the 711s have their ATMs around here.

Got my annual escrow refund. I'll dutifully put it to the principal, since it is technically money I already consider spent, so might as well.

I do the same with my tax refund, except straight to savings/investments.

H was employed by the state community college system and was eligible for the state employees CU. Once he was in, we set up accounts for me and both kids. StY's wife and kids were thereby eligible for accounts, too. Here, we belong to the county's educational CU. I'm not sure how we qualified for that one. We haven't dealt with a bank since NCNB, back in the day.

My dad was fond of Savings and Loan Associations. Before and for a while after he died, H dug through all the paperwork he could find, and ran around town tracking down accounts at different banks and S&Ls. Dad was not an "all eggs in one basket" kind of guy when money was involved. He and Mom both had little savings accounts at various banks that essentially were charging account maintenance roughly equivalent to interest earned. It wasn't as handy as keeping it in the mattress or the cookie jar, but it earned about the same amount.

ION, this evening Matilda and I were on our way home and I scored a pink gingham blouse for $2.75 at Goodwill. I'm both so happy and angry that I am so happy. Also, I can't stop thinking about the fact that these are the last few hours of the last month in human history in which ita was an embodied, present meatspace presence. And despite the fact that calendars and months are a purely human construct, I am irrationally hating tomorrow.

My credit union is associated with the university, but it's actually community-based; as long as you live in the county you can join.

askye, I hope you feel better soon. Not being able to sentence is worrisome.
