Funny thing about black and white. You mix it together and you get gray. And it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never gonna get anything but gray.

I haven't trusted science since I saw the film "Flubber."

I get to head to the doctor today to get antibiotics before we leave town tomorrow. I guess it's better than going to work?

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

We leave in the morning of the 24th to travel up to Iowa, and come back the evening o the 26th. I still have a few gifts to get, wrapping to finish and some baking to do, but it's under control.

Maria came to KC yesterday for the day and we had a WONDERFUL time! Total spontaneous visit, and it was a marvel of synchronicity -- Micah came in for his holiday stay the same day WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF MARIA'S FLIGHT, in the same terminal, and, when Micah's bag got sent to who-knows-where instead of KC, I already had to drive Maria back to the airport and the bag was ready to be picked up!

Maria got to meet my darling husband and my sweet boy, Micah, and we had a loooong, delicious, Bellini'd fancy brunch at a swank restaurant in downtown KC. We talked, we cursed, we laughed, we charmed the waiter...it was too short a trip, but it was absolutely bloody fantastic.

Later, I couldn't find the travel menorah I had/have somewhere, so I made one from the zillion tea light I have on a blue place mat, elevating the...shumash? that one candle, and Micah, pronounced Jewish-scholar-expert-in-residence, pronounced it fine.

And then he got a Deadpool poster, and freaked, because Deadpool is his FAVORITE FAVORITE OF ALL FAVORITES. And then we lay on the couches and watched Edge of Tomorrow, because Winter Soldier is only for rent in the stupid Redboxes right now, and we were all in PJ's.

REALLY. GOOD. DAY.

watched Edge of Tomorrow

That movie was actually really good. I wasn't sure what to expect, because Tom Cruise is kind of a tool, but it was great, due in large part to Cruise. That was a perfect role for him, and it reminded me that he can actually act when he's not being a tool. And Emily Blunt kicks ALL ASS.

Deadpool is his FAVORITE FAVORITE OF ALL FAVORITES

If he hasn't read the Marvel NOW trades of Deadpool: Dead Presidents, he will love it. It's ridiculously smart and, of course, super funny.

I'd seen it and was astonished at how entertaining and good it was. I HATE Cruise's smug face when he's being Tom Cruise, but he just damned good in most action flicks.

They loved it too!

I'll ask him about "Dead Presidents;" he's not allowed to read ALL the Deadpool stuff yet, of course, but he's almost 13, fer Chrissakes...he knows about bad words and cartoon violence.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Oh thank goodness -- I just got my mother to do online invitations for the open house she's having in two weeks. She didn't quite connect that it actually is just in two weeks, so was dithering about paper invites and whatever. So we've just sent 60 emails. Edit: I mean 72.

The violence in Dead Presidents is pretty broadly cartoon-ish, from what I remember. The basic storyline is that all the dead POTUSes are brought back from the dead, because comics. And Deadpool is brought in to stop them. So he has to re-kill them, which does mean violence. But IIRC it's very cartoon-ish, rather than grim and awful. I feel like it would be okay for a 13-year-old, but every kid (and parental guidelines for what they can read) is different.

And it's wickedly funny, riffing on all the presidents' various personality quirks and such.

You have to remember that being a 5-time Olympic medalist means Hilary Knight has been playing hockey at an elite level at least 16 years. It's impossible for her to be a teenage girl less than 16 years old, thus the President's complete lack of interest.

I had a very weird dream last night, wherein I watched JD from Scrubs and his wife (not Elliot) and parents (not his parents from Scrubs, Liz Sheridan and Barney Martin, so Seinfeld's parents) go on winter vacation to Poland. They stayed in a beach tourist town so it was too cold to actually go to the beach, and mallard ducks were hovering around people like mosquitoes. Also, anthropomorphic bananas were an oppressed ethnic group in the area; I saw one playing saxaphone in a band.

BWAAHAHAHA!

Oh, he's read a lot of the Deadpool, and I am the last person to be a hard-core censor about reading material. But there's some Deadpool's that ARE way, WAY too sexual and it's visual, ya know?

Maybe that'll be another Hanukkah gift: I need two more, anyway. Thanks!
