I'm in my fifth year at my current job, and it's going to be my last year. (I've already decided that, if I don't get an academic job this year, then I'm going to look outside of academia. I do like teaching, but not here, and the fact that I'd probably like teaching at a different school is kind of a moot point if a different school won't hire me.)
My dad is 67, and not planning on retiring any time in the foreseeable future, though he definitely has been cutting back on his work hours in the past few years -- when I was a kid, he frequently wouldn't get home until 8 or 9, but now, he's usually home by 6 or 7. It's also been years since I've seen him lugging home boxes of files over the weekend, though at least part of that is because they're now online. But I definitely remember it as a fairly constant thing when I was a kid that my dad would spend pretty much all of his time at home with a file open in front of him, dictating his notes (back when there were typists in the office who would transcribe the tapes), and now, he'll maybe do an hour or so of that a week.
In other news, I actually was a key player in diverting a potentially disastrous partnership with another non-profit. Sometimes, I swear my gift is being non-politic and saying the shit that others won't. I discovered afterwards that the alternative idea that my boss and I had been spitballing, and was only brought up by me, would have laid unspoken. And it ended up being the idea we went with. Otherwise we would have still been hung up on a concept that was unreasonable, unfeasible, and costly, with no internal gain for the organization. And that idea, that the ED was so hung up on, he actually apologized for deep-sixing to me, like I hadn't actually just gotten my way (for once).
Also, thank you to all for not shitting on me like I still feel like I deserve.
You do not, Juliebird!
No, definitely not. I would have expected that the registration would have reset to the date that it was renewed, but I guess your state does it differently!
Flu shot stung more than last year, and my arm is definitely sore, but not noticeable for swimming. I think the shooter just wasn't as good.
Now I have to check my registration renewal. Old car was Nov, but I'd assumed this one will be may. And shit, I think my DL is next year. I know passport is.
Loki has mild diarrhea. Not to worrisome, he ate some grass this weekend, but before I leave him for a week? Really, cat? Goddamnit. Luckily I've got 4 cat sitters, 3 well versed in vet visits, so if it gets worse, they can run him in. Uhg.
I was six months late with my registration once, and it only bought me six more months before renewal. I guess they don't want to give you free time. You're paying back fees as well as paying out the rest of the time frame.
I've started filling a second bag of stuff to throw away. While doing this I realized I still had an ancient Motorola phone in the closet. It's so old that there's no point in donating it, so now I have list of electronics I need to recycle and I'm pretty sure Best Buy will take all of them.
I should take the winter coats I no longer want someplace nearby. I also need to take a lengthy pass through my wardrobe and take a crapton of loose change to a Coinstar machine. Because keeping myself busy with this stuff will keep me from freaking out too much, and it will come in handy if I do finally get someone interested in hiring me.
shrift, I have no worries about your hireability. But does the situation at work mean there's no chance of getting an internal transfer out here?
juliebird, everyone fucks up. I regularly forgot to pay my property taxes, which results in an additional $200 on top of the bill, and a nasty letter from my mortgage holder. So I finally got a clue and put a reminder in Google Calendar. So now every year I get a couple of emails from myself when it's time to pay my taxes. That definitely helps.
I've been at my current job for... six months. Funny story: today there was a contractor visiting, and I bumped into him in the hallway, and it was the guy who I'd talked to for three months last year about hiring me (and he never did). I went to lunch with him & two coworkers anyway, and gave him my personal business card when he left, just in case.
TNG is home safe, with a donut around her neck and her butt shaved bare. She whined all the way in the car, but she's sleeping in her bed very comfortably now. Now we'll have two weeks of quiet time with lots of drugs.
