If you don't work in a given week (or work less than whatever your weekly unemployment payment would be), then you receive a payment. If you don't work at all in a given week, you receive the full payment, and if you do work, but less than full time, then the payment is the difference between what you earned and what your unemployment payment would have been.

Even if they're not paying into insurance, I understand there's some employee overhead they can avoid if you're doing contract work so this is cheaper for them. Rarely better for you, but they're not the caringest, are they?

Depending on how large the parent corporation is, it may simply be a way of moving the spend from one budget line to another. Salaries come out of a different bucket than contractor pay, so you can cut salaried workers, tell your shareholder how much more profitable you are, and then spend those profits hiring all the same people back as freelancers. It's a STUPID system, but everyone seems to do it.

They're so shady that it's actually several different companies -- I work for NewsH____ters, which is only about eight employees (and therefore they don't have to offer insurance to us), but that company strictly does work for the bigger company, so ... I just figure whatever way they can get around spending money or other obligations, they've figured out a way to do it.

Last I heard, the owner has about a dozen different corporations, and they're all tangled up.

I got to sleep around 3. Woke up at 6:15 to help husband get ready for his big exam today. Ate a chicken biscuit for breakfast. Went back to sleep until about 11:30. I'm now starving, but my body has absolutely no idea what it wants or should be eating.
