If you're looking for smaller than a domestic animal, owls come to mind as a symbol of intelligence and crows for actual smarts. Eagles have been associated with some religions. They may be the wrong size, but coyotes are gods for a number of tribes, as a creator, a teacher or a trickster. The raven is a trickster god. Something like a rat or mouse could show looking for god in a small or despised animal.
