I think at first they just thought the human was off when the lights were off. Some kind of kitten logic extrapolated from the lights at the shelter turning off when the humans left.

My adventure of the day: I was outside enjoying the hammock when Charlie starting making a lot of noise on the other side of the yard, so I went over to see what was going on, and what used to be just one dog had turned into two dogs.
Turns out the neighbors' new dog is a digger.
