"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

kat,

do you have to use that prompt? He won't understand it, I don't think. Can you ask him to write an essay about a situation he misunderstood? that might be easier.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

Teppy is THE BEST. ("That wasn't a question, but we will.")

I wrote 90% of it, since I am the wordsmith in the house (and Smartass-in-Chief). When Tim read through it for the first time, he got to that non-question, didn't even read the answer, and said, "That isn't a question, you know."

I just raised my eyebrows and pointed to the answer. Don't mess with the Smartass-in-Chief, son. It won't end well.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

There should be a secret racecar driver dance. I need this. For reasons.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

That program is BRILLIANT.

Sometimes I look at my last post and think of the person who used to make Top Ramen with frozen vegetables and an egg, and wonder how I got here.

See, and to me that sounds brilliant and kinda fancy. I mean...it's fancier than heating up a frozen dinner, which is what I do! I honestly think my cooking skills have probably regressed in the past few years, I cook so little.

Swouncing

Skipping and ignoring again, because, according to the Buffista Calendar, today is erika j's birthday.

Happy birthday, erika! With lots of wishes for a great day and a wonderful year!

Also, since I probably have minimal-to-none computer access during the holiday (Sukkot - sarameg, I always remember your description of it!), I'll already post that tomorrow, the 19th, will be lori's birthday; the following day, the 20th, will be Sue's birthday; the day after that, the 21st, will be Sophia Brooks' birthday; two days later, the 23rd, will be Emmett's birthday, and three days later, the 26th, will be Matilda's birthday (wow, Buffistas sure like the second half of September!).

Lots of early wishes all around!

Oh, and happy Sukkot, to those who celebrate it! And, you know what? Good days to everybody. I'll settle for simply good days.

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

That's a good one to try. I think I ended up asking him to tell a story about himself that allowed the reader to know him better. Less complex all around. Anytime I give him a writing prompt, I find I have to explain around it more clearly. It's difficult to teach personal narrative and personal memoir to a kid for whom the emotional side of situations are entirely opaque.
