"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Yeah, the amount of yellow fever in just the first thirty seconds of that? Makes me sick.

I was really taken aback by that, myself.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I thought it was going to be funny. Instead I'm just really, really upset. I mean, how was I supposed to function in a world that's like that? How was I supposed to have any objective sense of my own appearance or character or anything about me, when the reality was, I inhabited a world where *that* was the dominant perception of my race?

That and I apparently stole all your parents' cars. I'm not really sure what that was supposed to be about, just that growing up there was some big thing about me and your cars. I don't know. My dad worked at a steel mill. We always drove American cars.

All those people had never seen or interacted with a Japanese person outside of those contexts. I had no chance.

Liese, I'm sorry. I didn't think about how it might affect people. That was thoughtless of me. I'll take the link down. (Which I realize is closing the barn door after the horse got out, but deleting is all I can think of to do, other than apologize, which, again, I do.)

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Oh, Liese. I was going to come complain that apparently I am getting another cold, but instead I am weeping for humanity.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

No, Steph, leave it. It's not you. It's those assholes that make up most of the world.

Because books.

Oh dear. I guess I won't click that link, huh? I'm sorry, Liese.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Now I'll never know who to be mad at/sad for.

I think it is safe to say people in general, on both accounts.
