In upstate NY, we have Fish Fry year round!
IIRC, pre-Vatican II, Catholics were supposed to fast (not eat meat) on Fridays year-round. It was only after Vatican II that it was limited to Lent.
As it was, in New England in the 60s and 70s, you had non-meat options for meals on Fridays pretty much year-round, as a holdover, I figure.

I remember my grade school cafeteria (1977-1985) never offered a meat option on Fridays. Any Friday, not just Lent. It was either a fish sandwich or that gross-but-awesome pizza rectangle.
Places in New Orleans still tend to offer seafood options on Fridays.

Indeed. It is something my family does all summer when I go up to Otter Lake. And yes, when I grew up Catholic it was every Friday that was meatless. I don't know when they changed it to Lent.

Vatican II, maybe? I'm a definite post-VII baby and don't remember meatless Fridays ever, ever being a thing outside of Lent.
Come to think of it, in the 80's and 90s, school lunch on fridays always was tuna or fish, and even now, the hospital cafeteris usually has fish on Friday as well.

I've been wanting to try that fasting diet for a while, but not sure I want to try it for Lent per se. But I may use Lent as a motivator. Only problem is I don't want to fast two days a week, it sounds hard. (whine whine whine)
