Oh, man, I want very badly to take that Science and Cooking class, but I don't think I can.
Every office job I've had has been along the lines of 8:30-5 because of not getting paid for lunch.

If you worked hourly, 9-5, did you only get paid for 37.5 hours?
Standard hours here are 8:30-4:30 with an hour unpaid lunch. I work 8:30-4:45 with a half hour lunch (most of the time) which gives me every other Monday off. (Welcome to the velvet prison.)
I would have had to clock out for lunch, and not taking lunch was not an option, although some places were more strict about that than others (depending on how much trouble they had gotten into for breaking labor laws previously, I assume). Usually (always until now? Maybe) I was a temp, which might make a difference.
Eta: now I work 7-3:30 but I am salaried so the whole vibe is different
I am super interested in that cooking and science class.
I am taking a French class through work. I am learning stuff, but I am terrible when called on to speak. My brain seizes up and I forget words I've known for years. I always feel like I am the worst in the class. I know I need to practice more, and I was keener in the spring. For this summer course, I just don't wanna.
Last job called the work week 35 hours, this one calls it 40 -- I book 8 hours when I am here for 8 hours, even though obviously there is lunch. I don't know what hourly people do, or people who charge their time to projects.
Shakespeare: On the Page and in Performance.
This course will try to understand both Shakespeare’s popularity and his greatness by starting from a simple premise: that the fullest appreciation of Shakespeare can be achieved only when literary study is combined with analysis of the plays as theatre.
As always, I am wondering if the prof is any good.
Thanks to all of you, I just signed up to learn Spanish on Duolingo. Yay?
Yo soy una mujer!
I am hourly and work 8-5 or 9-6 (or 12-9) with a mandatory unpaid hour lunch. Bah, I say.
My coursera course didn't go so well (and I missed the completion certificate by 2% because I bailed on the last assignment because I truly could not see the point anymore). I was looking for an art history primer, but this course was a) random sprinklings of info b) had (optional) parts that totally took longer than their estimates and c) had assignment questions on information not covered in the material, and how do you half google? d) an over-emphasis on collage.
If I'd known I was close to passing, I'd have done the last quiz, but I was irritated and dispirited. I do have another one coming up, and I'm assuming each course is markedly different, so I'm not pre-judging one by the other.
Good lord. I wake up this morning and go to the IO9 Observation Deck (their natter board), and there's an article titled: What I learned from [ita] by incest boy. Content? To wit:
1. Don't fuck with her.
2. O Deck is a respite from the world, don't be a dick here.
3. Don't fuck with her.
Thank you, madam.
Seriously.
I needed an attitude adjustment. The regular net has made me quick-tempered, quick to judge and hateful without realizing I'm doing it.
Great! I mean, on one hand, great. On the other hand USE YOUR INSIDE VOICE. Now the people that hate me, just got a great big morning goosing to their dislike of me.
But! No one can ruin that I only really woke up three times last night, and that's the best sleep I've gotten in a week. I am diligently going to continue babying the neck/shoulder, getting way WAY in front of the ouch until I see pain doc on Tuesday. I think I have enough meds to get me that far.
