I was thinking of making a donation to a breast cancer charity. Does anyone have a suggestion of the best ones to donate to?
A new tool I learned about (Thank you NewsHour on PBS!). Charity Navigator rates many non-profit organizations. As they say in their about us area, it shouldn't be the deciding factor. Just because they have a lower rating, doesn't mean they are not worthy of donation. If they have stars in the rating, that is good. They have ratings that are "zero stars" and "Donor Advisory". Those are the ones to watch out for. Anyhow. Here is a link to Charity Navigator with a search for "Breast Cancer".

Omnis, that would probably also help.
Breast cancer gets way more than its share of donations, so I usually suggest donating to the American Cancer Society. If you want to give to a breast-cancer-specific charity, I'd suggest Breastcancer.org or the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation [link]
Charity Navigator is good, but they also don't know the whole story. Our favorite charity, the GS rescue where we got Kaylee and Newton, has been embroiled in an awful lawsuit accusing them of mismanaging funds for two years, and knowing the back story, it's the foundation suing who is at fault. They are flagged on that site, though.
Sj, sorry to hear. Cancer sucks.
Yup, we're not on Charity Navigator because we file 990EZs, not the full form.
also, newer charities aren't rated. I think they need 5 years of financials in order to rate. So, a new fav for me to donate to has no ratings, as it started about 3 years ago. (Team Rubicon, which helps vets by helping folks in disaster zones, so, double help).
Again, don't base solely on the site. They say that in the about the ratings area. It's just another tool to help judge charities, especially if you are unfamiliar with them.
Holy shit! I'm fine, but I just woke up with the police in my home. Apparently while I was napping my front door blew open, and my neighbors called the cops. I'm still shaking.
It looks like the health -ma worked, but we are not totally sure yet.
Erika, I'm glad to hear that. I hope all the results are good.
TCG is home, so I'm a little calmer now. I must remember to double lock the door from now on.
