Connie, don't forget to look into applying for survivor's benefits from Social Security. You may be entitled to a portion, as long as he paid enough into the system. I'm not sure whether it's at the age of 50 or 55 though. Is he entitled to any other pensions?

I don't think he has any other pensions. His veterans benefits would have gotten him a free headstone and a spot in a national cemetery.
Shadow the cat has lost some of his picky eating habits now that his enabler isn't around to cater to him. And he's started snuggling with me at night--thought he always chooses about an hour before the alarm to come in and say "I love you, Mommy, hug me and let me sleep on your arm and give you dirty looks when you have to get up."
