How does one make oatmeal (no prize for that segue) in the microwave without everything going splodey?

Sophia,
I think you should ice it as soon as you get home. that's all I got.
Put oatmeal in bowl. Use microwave to boil water in cup. pour boiling water onto oatmeal. Stir well. cool bowl 30 seconds at a time until done, stirring each time. Not a huge labor saver over stovetop except: 1) and water not added to oatmeal is pour off immeadiately. Rest evaporates from cup. 2) When done with bowl it can be put in dishwasher.
Thus, no saving in cooking labor, but some saving in cleaning labor.
WRT Thanksgiving, my mom has decreed that she cannot stand turkey, and isn't all that fond of the usual trimmings, either. We are therefore having homemade Thai curry. Possibly shrimp curry at that.
I am not complaining.

I put a saucer on top of everything I heat in a bowl in the microwave.
Also, heat for 45 seconds, stir, heat for 45 seconds, stir.
Huh.
I put half a cup of oatmeal in a bowl with one cup water and nuke for two min. No cover, no stirring until its done.
Or I'll do one cup oatmeal with two cups of water for three minutes.
I have yet to have a splodey incident.

Guess who's just been made content update lead for our refresh release that happens in mid-December? Because my new boss and the two senior writer/editor process people think I'll be really good at it and want me to take on more lead-type responsibilities? I sense an "omg I tricked them into thinking I'm competent freak-out in my very near future.
Sophia, that sounds very disconcerting. The icing idea seems good.
I have two Thanksgivings planned--one this Saturday with friends and one on the day with my upstairs neighbor (also a friend) and her family. Both will be turkey centric, but I'll just be bringing a side dish and wine.
ETA: That's great, Jilli!
I don't think I need Andrew Ti to help me with this one:
Coworker: I had a really bad morning. There was a truck blocking me in my driveway for a half an hour! It was one of those guys picking through the trash for cans.
Me: Did he at least apologize?
Coworker: Well he was black.
Walking was not good, but I made it to the bus. I will try ice and hope it is better in the morning. When I put my weight on it, it feels like my knee is just going to bend the wrong way. I have "loose ligaments", so maybe this was part of that
