My poor coworker whose last day was supposed to be Friday is here today packing up, but his party was not rescheduled! Poor thing. And he's been here 18 years in a variety of roles, so a lot of people are sad to see him go. (Unlike when my last day at a job was supposed to be 9/12/01.)

One of my project managers just announced that she was taking 3 months paternity leave for a new 4 footed addition to her family. I.... I don't know what my response is.

Yeah, the gender thing makes sense (I was there when she married her wife right before I moved to Colorado). But...for a puppy? And announcing it like that?

That doesn't make her a dad, though, even before we get to the part where we're talking about a puppy.
it seems to me she would probably refer to her wife's leave as maternity and her own as paternity. so I get that she's probably using the terms to refer to each half of the partnership and not strictly male and female. Fine, be unusual since we don't have good nouns for either side of a lesbian relationship.
HOWEVER. I still want to know how she got 3 months approved for a dog.
This is the kind of question where people who either have barely really thought about the position (beyond, I need and job and this has some key words!) or who are really trying to find a route in to the company to then look for something else tend to expose themselves.
I've never been part of an interview where someone cocked this up (needless to say, it wasn't my question), but since we're interviewing offshore consultant developers right now when we only have the one consulting company supplier...I guess you can rank the applicants based on who had the best answer? It just seems like something that tells you zip. (This position is also maybe for six months.)
