A year and a half ago, I could have eviscerated him with my thoughts. Now I can barely hurt his feelings. Things used to be so much simpler.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

I say we engage in revisionist history and revise Tom's day up a grade or two. It takes guts to get as far as you did, Tom. People live and die without airing that much about destructive pasts. That's what helps making them a past and not a present.

Dude. HELL. YES. This. I don't know what it feels like to you, but just saying what you did to your mom is a big thing. You own your feelings about your childhood. And now she knows it.

Tom, I am in awe of you. Despite being raised by two people who were hurtful, selfish, and mean - YOU are none of those things. You are a joy and a love.

Truer words have never been spoken, man.

It's a day late, y'all, but I am SO thankful for my Buffistas.

For that price, I'm tempted to get it, just so I can yell "RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!" whenever I make a mixed drink.

So very true! I'm sorry the day was so disappointing. I think you should consider a visit to Florida next Thanksgiving. Just sayin'.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Holy crap. I literally kept thinking I had seen the craziest one, and then I kept scrolling! People, man.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

mr. flea leaves for China tomorrow at 7am and I have to think of something to do with the children all weekend,

Now is the time when all good parents get out the DVDs.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Tom, my aunt always said my Mom remembered the past with rose-colored binoculars, very selective memory about only the good bits. Compartmentalizing may be how she could survive in one piece.

Anyway, good on ya.

Tom, my dad was....at least darn close to the line of emotionally abusive, frequently, growing up, and occasionally verging on physical. Often I was seriously upset not about how he treated me (I was generally the "good kid" who stayed out of trouble) but about how he wailed on my brother, who was more of a troublemaker as a kid (though only by my family's standards, not so much ordinary). And yet, my brother claims it wasn't that bad and he doesn't remember it like that. Maybe because I was older. Maybe because my dad did mellow a lot by the time my brother was in high school. But my brother doesn't seem to understand why I'm not tight with our father. ...that said, my brother also moved to Europe. So.

Everybody in a family experiences it differently. Doesn't mean yours isn't right, or they're lying. But sometimes we remember what we want, and sometimes we can't forget what we'd like to.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Larry Hagman's dead!

But he was just in the middle of filming Dallas! He was looking good!

Whoa...
