Wow, are things just not bouncing back for your industry, or is this a more generalized slash-and-burn corporate philosophy?
Partly the former, plus alligning skills sets with company goals. We actually have been hiring lately, including bringing back a few people who were laid off in one of the prior rounds (which I've never heard of happening before).
The folks who were let go generally had out-of-date skills (in some cases stubbornly not devloping new ones), weren't good team people (since we've gone agile in our development process), or had turned in substandard work at some point.

The Jens I know I refer to as Ferna, Rufus, Cass (or My Jen) and Adams (or Chem Jen) and My Cousin Jenny. I think they were all born within 18 months of each other.

Well, I don't have any fun in shipping couples who don't have emotional or eye candy appeal. It's not about folks standing next to each other. But shipping also doesn't make anything disappear. I would say half of one percent of my ships (and, loh, despite adjacency not being a criterion, they are legion) make me want it to happen in "real" life. No fictional friendships or camaraderie were harmed in the making of this intellectual and emotional exercise. Not even devalued.
The examples of friendship exist right there on the screen, as well as in the places I take the people to in my heads. Sometimes. It's not like foeyay (I was just thinking of JenGod thinking of Ho Yay, and I wonder how that feels, to have conceived of such a punchy and infectious shorthand. I hope she's pleased as punch. And with the last job of hers I was aware of, hey! Why not put it on the resume...you probably outdo your boss on this one (Actually, peon, I coined the word "gay". Know your place).) doesn't have its fun too.
