My worst commute was when I lived in Wheaton, MD, and commuted, via the Beltway, to McLean, VA.
After that job, I decided that I never wanted to live anywhere that I needed to own a car.

My boss commutes 60 miles, and it takes her the same amount of time driving as it does me with my 14 miles on the bus.

Oh god that sounds horrible.
Average commute time for my zip code is 41 minutes (average commute times for almost everywhere in NYC is equal to the average time to get to midtown Manhattan on the subway). My commute is longer because my office is three long blocks from the closest station.
[eta: Neat, if you scroll up to Westchester County you can clearly see where the express stations are by the color-coding.]
I would happily take the bus for my commute, if the bus went anywhere near work, ran more than twice an hour if lucky, and didn't stop running at 7 PM. Busses are frowned upon around here. People are not afraid to say things like "I don't want to ride the bus, do you know what kind of people ride the bus?"
I am just under 6 and a half miles away. Typical is half an hour or a little less, but it has been anywhere from 10 minutes (weekend morning) to 2 hours (fatal accident on the nearby freeway shut everything down)
I think it would take longer for me to take the bus to work than to walk. There's a stop not far from my house, and one right by work, but they are on different lines and the transfer point is probably at least as far from each as they are from each other.
Eta: I do have two train tracks to cross on the most direct driving route, but there isn't usually a train to wait for at the time I'm going.

Every once in a while someone commits suicide by train, which causes delays of 1.5 to two hours.
I think my commute is about 15-20 miles each way. As I rarely go directly home (swing by, pick up Paul, go pick up Lilly) if I drive in, I haven't measured lately.
Mathy question for afriend: when calculating key word density for a 300 word article, 2% would be 6 uses of the word, and 4% would be 12 times?
Yes. 300 × 0.02 = 6; 300 × 0.04 = 12.
