In other fuck cancer news, my boss goes in for surgery tomorrow to remove a tumor in his tongue. He will be out for at least three weeks. He will need to relearn how to swallow and speak.
While he's out I'll be trying to do his job and mine which will probably be overwhelming but nothing compared to what he's dealing with.

Coincidentally, I just ordered this Parallax Laser Range Finder. I'm going to attach that to a servo-powered tilt/pan thingie, which will be controlled by an Arduino. The end result will be a simple 3-D laser scanner. (OK, it'll only be capable of scanning one side of a 3-D object at a time. Unless I build a turntable to scan objects on.)
So I will be able to do a 3-D scan of my face and 3-D print a Pez head from it.

In totally different news. A friend/co-worker from the Boise office is on our campus this week. I just got to see her for a few today and we are going to do dinner tomorrow. She is my confidant of all work things and many personal things. SO nice to have her here for a quick bit.
Also, I stopped at our campus cafeteria for lunch (chicken risotto) and they are promoting the MyFitnessPal app. All the menu items have bar codes to scan into the app. Pretty cool.

Heh. Basically, I'm attaching a laser and camera to some motors to allow a $25 computer to scan left and right and up and down across an object to acquire 3-D data.
The laser and camera together can determine the distance to something at any point in time by using parallax. Doing this a bunch of times as the scanner moves around produces the 3-D image.
