Probably the only trains that use those tracks are Midnight Trains to Georgia. (Everbody with me - whoo whoo!)

Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
I live about half a mile from the railroad tracks and got used to it pretty quickly. I do still get ear wormed from hearing that lonesome whistle blow, but I can sleep through it just fine as long as the bedroom windows are closed.
I kind of loved living several blocks from the train station, because I do like the whistle sound.
A block away is one thing. Less than a hundred yards is not fun.
My first house as a child was near the train tracks, and I still fun those sounds deeply soothing.
Oh yeah, I had friend with commuter rail tracks in their backyard. That was noticeable.
Are there people who don't root for the underdog?
yes. I won't accuse the whole current GOP (still trying to stay positive, it is early in the morning), but certainly most of Wall Street, Romney and his friends absolutely do not root for the factory worker.
The kinds of quotes coming from Wall Street workers (not CEOs, middle of the road people investing in funds, brokers) absolutely shocked me when a NYT article interviewed them. The sense of entitlement they felt was astounding. Have you discovered penicillin? Then shut the fuck up with your six+ figure salary. Feel blessed.
We lived near the tracks when I was a baby. Mom told me she rather liked it, because when she'd be up with me at 3am the sound of the train made her feel less isolated, like there were other people around and awake.
My apartment was right next to the elevated metro and commercial lines (like 50 ft maybe?) I barely noticed it unless I was on the phone on the balcony, or near an open window when it went by. Which, metro, not infrequent.
Damnit, I was going to Do Stuff this morning. Instead, I dozed to the radio, first in bed and then on the couch. Guess I'll just wait and go swimming, then Do Stuff.
That's why I prefer living in town anymore. There are few things as quiet as 3 AM out in the country. And then the dog starts barking at . . . something.
