Honestly, I'd say a Muslim at this point.
FWIW, I would vote for Gudanov or tommyrot or Ginger or Zenkitty or Jessica or any of our other Buffista atheists in a heartbeat, and campaign like crazy for them at my church.
First, of course, I'd grab y'all by the collar and shake you till your teeth rattled and sob, "ARE YOU FUCKING INSANE, RUNNING FOR OFFICE? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF?"
I wonder who would be the most unelectable: An Arab person, a Latino person, a Jewish person, an Atheist person, a woman, a Muslim, a homosexual.
Atheist, I'll bet. At least women and one Jewish person have made it to the presidential primaries, a Latino person was supposedly considered as a running mate (Bill Richardson, then Gov. of NM), and we have one Arab-American Congressman (West Virginia Rep. Nick Rahall). And, of course, there's Rep. Barney Frank, who married Jim Ready last month. I'm not aware of any atheists currently (openly) serving in US Federal government, and I can't recall any atheists on either party's presidential ticket in the 20th or 21st century. Maybe there are some atheist congress-people, but I'm not aware of them.
ETA: Pew Forum lists 5 members of Congress whose faith (if any) is unknown: [link]
And Wikipedia says two US Senators have "unspecified" religious affiliations: [link]
Hips tilted back.
The most unelectable? I butch lesbian muslim in hijab.
Oh, wait, Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) is an atheist Unitarian Universalist. [link]
So my preceding argument is invalid, I guess. He's been in Congress for quite a while. I wonder if he could get elected as a freshman member today?
Oh, thank heavens.
I just spent an hour on the phone with a woman who runs a consulting service placing the elderly in assisted living. She's marvelous: sympathetic and knowledgeable, and free. (Although I would be more than happy to pay for her services.)
Seems to think that even with my mother's trifecta of issues (dementia, mental health, mobility-impaired), we can find a facility that will take both my parents and keep them together and give my mother the care she needs and my father the support he needs and all that without breaking the bank.
It will mean a lot of ugliness getting there because my mother is so incredibly difficult (suspicious, paranoid, nasty), but if we can do it, there is almost certainly a place that will take them.
Dear sweet jebuslug, let us be able to do this.
That's great, Consuela. I'm so glad you found someone who can help!
Apparently, the proportion of the pop who claim atheist is growing.
Paul Ryan is a conservative Catholic (supposedly) but was an apostle of Ayn Rand. I have heard him speak quite fervently about Rand and not about Jesus. I wonder, in my heart of hearts, if he really believes in God.
Oh consuela, that sounds amazing! I hope things go smoothly.
