Really interesting piece on "Psychiatry's Legitimacy Crisis" - which gives an excellent historical overview of the problems in psychiatric diagnosis, specious claims to science, amorphous culturally derived standards and the politics (and economics) of the DSM.

The real world effect of the new DSM coming out in 2013 will certainly affect things like education funding and insurance coverage for children diagnosed as being on the autistic spectrum.
