Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

If the site said that login IDs were email addresses...well, I'd still have forgotten I'd made a custom ID for that purpose at first, but when I saw that the "lost username" email was going there, I might have worked it out.

Poopyheads.

Security officer gave the required biannual "Be afraid, be very afraid" presentation last week. There pretty much is no way to be sufficiently careful for a) the company and b) him. I usually have a week or so of guilt and false resolutions after these presentations. Still rolling around in it.

Another one of those articles that insists everyone has the Facebook, so if your prospective squeeze/employer can't find you, it's a red flag: [link] -- I can't work out if the author is serious (because clearly some people do believe that), or they're milking a convenient topic.

I emailed the developer who didn't catch the bug we set loose in production to ask what happened with her testing. I am going to assume I stressed her out, because I can't make head nor tail of her English. I am no more informed than before I asked. So it's no easier to defend her, and no harder to throw her under the bus (uh, which I have no intention of doing).

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

I got online in '91, when I subscribed to GEnie(anyone else remember it?) I think I was on AOL around that time. Also poked around local BBSs. (Well, as much as I could with 2400 baud modem.)

I love my son. I love my son. I love my son. I will wake up at 2:30am to pick him up from the police station. Yes. My alarm is set. Two freaking thirty am in the morning. Maybe if I go to sleep now it won't feel like two freaking thirty am in the morning when I go get him.

I know "there's no tone on the internet", but seriously--if I really meant "there's no reason to assume Joss' big screen success can translate to TV" then I'm too stupid to talk to. Way too stupid.

Oh Suzi. Yikes. That's middle of the night.

I'm having folks over on Friday. I start work on Thursday. I also have a head cold from hell and I can't breathe.

Also, my son just wiped his entire mouth on his tshirt while eating pizza. Even though there was a napkin right there.

Sigh.

Punishingly Intricate

I worked at Schwab in the early 90s and we had a sort of inter-office email/IM. It was used for flirting, to spread word that Kurt Cobain had died, and to work out inter-office drug deals. The clever dudes doing the deals were sending messages like "Hey, want to come play 8-ball at my place later?" Shockingly they were found out.

I got the first computer of my own in 95, when I went to grad school, and got online online then.

lisah, you just totally reminded me! I worked at a DC nonprofit in 1993. We used our internal messaging system to set up 4:00 PM Hearts games, which we also played online across three different floors.

We'd also sometimes plan on ganging up on people during said Hearts games via the messaging system.
