And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

My commute is about that - 45 minutes minimum, usually closer to 90. That's why I started biking, actually - I don't save any time, but I never get caught in public transit clusterfucks.

LeN, my family has had property in Canada (two cabins on the main property, plus three or four satellites depending how you count it) for five generations. I've been going to this cabin every summer since I was born.

Our wings are not tired.

Well the hiring manager (also a "J" as in Jennifer) just asked me to lunch on Tuesday at one of my favorite Palo Alto restaurants and also wants to give me an office tour. Should be fun!

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

if only I could embroider.

Take a class! If you're not commuting, you'll have time.

Aims, Brave was indeed awesome, and is to blame for the current pseudo-sympathetic phrase I find myself uttering a lot. "Aw, wee lamb." It cuts down a lot on the cursing and on my blood pressure.

brillig

Had some lovely news today that's a reflection of less lovely news for my landlord. He was recently laid off, and he'd said when he got the news that we'd probably have to clean out the room I've been using as an office so he could move into there. Today, however, I learned that he's in Salt Lake City while he looks for work, with his pseudo-girlfriend. This makes a great deal of sense because he's got a lot more opportunities in the big city than here in our podunk town. I'm sorry he's looking for work, but yay! I keep my room!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

So, Terry Goodkind publicly shamed someone he says pirated one of his books. And, it seems, provided links to a pirated copy of his book.

I'm not trying to defend Goodkind's behaviour and use of his very big stage to shame a much smaller silhouette, but rather asking--why am I supposed to feel bad for the person who was pirating the book? Why couldn't he just not pirate, and not distribute? I know that when I do that it's wrong and I risk bad shit happening. I'm absolutely not asking for anyone's sympathy should 21st Century Fox swoop in and finish what they threatened. I am not a noble suffering figure for grabbing Doctor Who ahead of time, or if someone dangled a copy of Cyteen in front of me after I discovered yesterday that I can't buy it for my Nook...

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

I'm teaching at UCLA this week and next. From our new house it takes about 75 minutes each way during traffic/commute time and is 33 miles each way.

That makes me think I won't do this next year.

Our wings are not tired.

Kat, was it closer in your old house?

Yes, ish. Actually yes. 20 miles closer but only 15-20 minutes (so LA, right?)

All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

Once again emergency responders come to my door when I'm not dressed for public. At least this time it was a t-shirt and shorts (just sans bra) and not pjs or dripping wet in a robe.
