Social media makes it easier than ever before to let your representatives know how you feel. Facebook and Twitter also make it possible for those outside the representative's office to know how many messages are posted to him, as opposed to his office reporting how many emails or letters he got. I imagine that being shown a FB or Twitter page flooded with angry posts has a more visceral impact on a rep than just being told how many emails and letters his interns had to deal with. I also imagine that more people speak up because it's easier. I know I'm more involved and vocal now that I can post a message than when I had to compose an email or letter every time I had something to say.
