Inara: So, explain to me again why Zoe wasn't in the dress? Mal: Tactics, woman. Needed her in the back. 'Sides, those soft cotton dresses feel kinda nice. It's the whole... air-flow.

In the fun facts department...

In case you didn’t already know that IQ is not (at all) set in stone, this is a good article about a recent study: [link] Check out the difference--we aren’t talking a couple of points.

This is very much related to research done for years by researchers such as Carol Dweck about growth mindset. I don’t know about all of you, but learning that IQ isn’t fixed was a revelatory (and humbling) discovery for me when I first read about it. Dweck wrote a great book about fixed versus growth mindset ( [link] ), but this article about how not to talk to kids is a great snapshot: [link]

Can you tell I was in an education class all day today? When I saw that NPR story, it made me want to share again. Sorry if I’ve linked to the Dweck stuff before.

Google+ to allow nyms. Hmm. I wondered if they'd hold out forever.

I admit I'm surprised. They'd dug their heels in so hard it made it look like they would never change their minds.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

Mom: OH HAI! Your brother and SIL are losing their house and moving in with us. Also, they found some polyps in my uterus so I had surgery last week, but they made an error. There were no polyps so they accidentally cut my cervix, instead. What's going on in California?

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Yikes, Allyson.

Because books.

Oh god, Allyson. That's awful.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Yeah, I'll need to see more details on exactly how Google+ will "support" pseudonyms before I'm convinced. If support means there's an additional field and my physical name is still exposed to advertisers then it's a no-go for me. If it means they're content with an anonymous profile, then that's better.

Oh, Allyson, that's awful. I'm sorry.

Liese: yeah, I'm going to wait and see what they intend to do.

The way they found out is that over dinner my SIL told them that they had to put up the house on a short sale to avoid a foreclosure. My parents had no idea that they were in this sort of trouble, so they were trying to wrap their heads around it. My mom said, "where will you go?"

And my nephew piped in with, "we're gonna live with you, Grammy!"

So she figures that they were discussing it in front of the kids.

Cats to become a rabbit should gather immediately now here

My goodness, Allyson- that is a lot to take!

In Rochester the 99% protest, across from the Bank of America, is from 4 pm - 5 pm each day. This just happens to be at the central bus stop.

What is weird is none of the protesters (all white) are interacting with the bus people (at least 75% minority). I think they should try to get all the bus people protesting, too! Cause we (the bus people) are like, the 33%, and as services are cut, so will the bus routes. In fact, already they have cut the runs of my bus line so that only every other one goes all the way to my house, which means if I leave work at 4:35, I get home at 6:30. (I used to get home at 5:30) because I have to wait at the central bus stop for around and hour, or stay at work longer, or go to the grocery store half way, which I did tonight.)

Holy shit Allyson.

You and brenda need to get together and drink sidecars or something.
