I did it!
The research manager walked by, and I told her I was super open to student sharing in the summer and the future, but that right now I just need someone to swoop in and take over some projects with little direction, and she agrees that Candidate B is not that person!
She thinks that Candidate B is staying for the summer, and would be open to sharing if she wants 40 hours per week.
I feel so much better.
