When I go next summer, I'm planning on renting a car for the Scotland portion of our trip, so I can drive it from Edinburgh up to Orkney. And it will be me driving, even though Mom will be accompanying me, since my sister warned me that Mom is useless with right-hand driving (she went on a driving trip in southern England with her a few years back), and not much better with maps, so it sounds like I'll be doing all the driving and relying on a GPS.

An apostrophe belongs there or not, depending not upon other standard rules of grammar, but depending upon historical use in this particular instance, as is true of other place names.
