And because it needs its own post, I just found out a former student just lost her grandmother and cousin to an apparent double murder on the Apache reservation today. The BIA is investigating so it sounds like they're waiting on the feds to arrive from Flagstaff. (One of the vagaries of pseudo-sovereignty: tribal police have authority up to a certain point, but the feds have jurisdiction over capital cases like rape and murder. Of course, those cases aren't usually on federal radar, so justice is often slipshod at best. Another classic example of institutional racism at work.)
Anyway, it's horrible and my former student is upset, of course, and I'm frustrated because there's little we can do.
How awful, Liese. It is tough enough to lose loved ones by natural causes, but a violent loss adds another level of grief.
Liese,
ugh. It has to be a family member, right? I mean no stranger is going to run up on them like that right?
Who knows, at this point? But yeah, a grandmother and her granddaughter, it doesn't exactly sound like a drug deal gone bad. And it happened in their home, I think.
Oh, Liese, I am so sorry. That is awful.
Oh Liese, that's terrible.
Liese, how horrible. Tons of ~ma for your former student.
So, my dad has taken to calling Sammy Aang (because his hair sort of looks like an arrow in front). I don't know which I like better - my dad calling Sammy Aang or that my dad knows who Aang is.
ION, I would love some advice from anyone who feels so inclined to drop by my LJ [link]
